Spain's National Court judge Baltasar Garzon set bail at 75 million pesetas ($1 = 150 pts) for Carlos Trenor and Jose Ramon Aranguren arrested last month during the police operation against the Basque newspaper Egin. Bail for Trenor and Aranguren was set at 50 and 25 millions respectively.
Trenor and Aranguren, former members of the editorial companies Orain and Ardatza, are being held along with eight more people linked to Egin and its sister radio station Egin Irratia. They were arrested on July 15.
Defence attorneys appealed the judge decision not to release detainees.
Prosecutors demanded from judge Garzon to maintain the closure of Egin and Egin Irratia, and to reject the defence request to declassify the case. The state prosecutor said that the case cannot be declassified until the investigation is finished.
During an interview granted to a Spanish magazine, a former director of Spain's Civil Guard, Jose A. Saenz, said that the judiciary followed the dictates of the executive and ordered the closure of Egin and Egin Irratia. Saenz also said that the dirty war against Basque dissidents lasted 11 years, and that an investigation to find out who are responsible for state terrorism should include former prime ministers Adolfo Suarez and Felipe Gonzalez.
